Code of Ethical Conduct for Deputies Promoted in the Parliament of North Macedonia

The Parliament recently hosted an event marking the promotion of the Code of Ethical Conduct for Deputies, an initiative that had previously received approval from the body’s deputies. The ceremony brought together several key international and domestic figures to discuss the implications of the newly formalized ethical standards. Speakers at the event included the Speaker of the Parliament, Afrim Gashi, alongside representatives from international organizations.

Present were Kilian Val, the Head of the OSCE Mission in Skopje; Robert Skot Hejzlet, the leader of the Swiss Parliamentary Support Program and High Representative and Resident Director of the NDI in North Macedonia; and Ajla Van Heel Merdanoviq, a representative from the ODIHR Unit for Democratic Governance and Gender Equality. Also speaking was Mile Lefkov, Chairman of the Commission for Rules, Mandate, and Immunity Issues. During his address, Speaker Gashi emphasized the profound nature of the Code of Ethics.

He stated that the document functions fundamentally as a moral covenant. This covenant, he noted, is established not only among the deputies themselves but also between the elected representatives and the citizenry they serve. The promotion underscores a commitment within the parliament to uphold higher standards of conduct.

The discussions highlighted the collective responsibility of the deputies to adhere to the principles outlined in the code, thereby reinforcing public trust in the legislative process.
