Lockheed Martin and Rheinmetall are planning the first production of ATACMS missiles in Europe

American defense contractor Lockheed Martin and Germany’s Rheinmetall have reached an agreement to begin the production of the ATACMS short-range ballistic missile system within Germany. This collaboration marks a significant milestone, as it represents the first instance of a U.S.-developed weapon system being manufactured outside of the United States. The Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) possesses a range of up to 300 kilometers and has seen widespread deployment by Ukraine throughout the ongoing conflict.

The announcement comes as NATO leaders convene in Turkey for the alliance summit. The meeting is anticipated to place a heightened focus on European military readiness, particularly amid ongoing discussions regarding defense expenditures, which have been a topic of discussion by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Under the terms of the memorandum of understanding, Rheinmetall will establish a dedicated center to oversee the production process. The agreement solidifies a strategic partnership aimed at enhancing European defense industrial capacity. This move suggests a deepening commitment among NATO allies to bolster their defense capabilities through the localized manufacturing of advanced military hardware previously associated with American defense giants like Lockheed Martin.

The production capability for the ATACMS is expected to bolster regional defense stockpiles.
