Historic change in Serie A, VAR will have new powers from next season

For the 2026/27 season, the top tier of Italian football, the serie A, is slated to implement a significant procedural change regarding match officiating, integrating enhanced use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology. This technological upgrade will extend the scope of VAR review beyond its current applications, allowing for corrections concerning incorrectly awarded corner kicks and decisions related to second yellow cards. The adoption of these enhanced protocols is discretionary, with each national federation retaining the authority to decide whether to integrate the measure.

While the elite level of Italian football is set to adopt the system, Serie B and Serie C are currently evaluating implementation, a process partly complicated by the existing infrastructure, specifically the number of available broadcast cameras. According to reports from Corriere dello Sport, the updated guidelines grant referees the authority to nullify a corner kick that has been incorrectly awarded, provided that the VAR review process does not disrupt an action currently in progress on the field. Furthermore, the var system is slated to intervene in other critical match decisions, signaling a comprehensive overhaul of officiating standards across the league.

This represents a substantial evolution in how disciplinary and technical decisions are managed within the serie A competition.
