Human rights activist Natasha Kandiq recently addressed public statements made by Serbian Minister Snezhana Paunović, emphasizing her awareness of historical events that occurred in Kosovo. Kandiq highlighted that the Minister was born in the city of Peja, suggesting this background provides her with specific knowledge regarding the period of conflict. According to Kandiq, the Minister is aware of the circumstances surrounding the expulsion of the Albanian population from Peja on March 27, 1999.
Kandiq stated that on that date, Serbian police were responsible for expelling nearly the entire Albanian community from the city. She recounted that the forced departures took two forms: some residents were compelled to leave in organized columns on foot toward Montenegro, while others were deported via bus to Albania. In her remarks, Kandiq directly linked the Minister’s background to this history.
She asserted that because Minister Paunović originates from Peja, she cannot be unaware of the events described. The statements from Kandiq underscore a historical dispute regarding the population displacement that occurred during the war in Kosovo, placing the focus squarely on the documented departure patterns from Peja.
