The Durrës Court has implemented precautionary legal measures against several individuals connected to the Albanian Post branch in Durrës. Elisabeta Mataj, the former director of the local post branch, was placed under an “arrest in prison” measure. Mataj faces accusations of embezzling 69 million new lekë, funds originally allocated for pension and social assistance programs.
During the recent court session, the Prosecution introduced new evidence, noting that Mataj reportedly frequented a casino, a detail that has been incorporated into the ongoing investigation against her. Additionally, the Court mandated “house arrest” for Valbona Duni, the Head of Finance, and Paola Dana, the accountant. These two individuals are accused, alongside the former director, of engaging in criminal acts including “Misuse of Office” and “Theft by Misuse of Office,” allegedly committed through collaborative efforts.
According to investigative reports, the alleged misconduct by the three suspects is suspected to have taken place during April and May of this year. The actions taken by the court reflect ongoing judicial scrutiny regarding the management of funds within the post system. The proceedings underscore the court’s focus on investigating financial irregularities within the institution.
The measures imposed by the court are intended to secure the integrity of the ongoing criminal inquiry.
