Volkswagen brings vehicle technology to electric bicycles

Volkswagen has announced a new line of technologically equipped, licensed electric bicycles in collaboration with the e-bike specialist n+. This new offering shifts the focus from traditional metrics like battery capacity or motor power to enhancing rider safety and environmental awareness. The central feature of these new electric cycles is a system called Smart View.

This technology is designed to provide cyclists with comprehensive situational awareness, mirroring some of the monitoring capabilities found in modern automobiles. The Smart View system integrates a rear-facing camera with radar sensors to actively monitor surrounding traffic. A key component of the system is an integrated handlebar display screen.

This allows riders to view what is happening behind them without needing to physically turn around, thereby maintaining better balance and safety. Furthermore, the embedded radar sensors provide audible warnings when vehicles approach from the rear, alerting the cyclist to potential hazards. This initiative by Volkswagen aims to incorporate advanced automotive safety technology into personal cycling, providing riders with enhanced awareness of their surroundings.

The integration of these smart features into the bicycles positions them as more than just modes of transport, but as connected safety platforms.
