Italian financial police and customs authorities have intercepted a significant shipment of illicit narcotics at the port of Vado Ligure. Authorities seized over 770 kilograms of cocaine, which was concealed within a consignment of bananas originating from Ecuador. During the search of a refrigerated container, investigators discovered approximately 650 packages containing the narcotics.
Preliminary analyses indicated that the seized substance was of very high purity. Some of the drug packages bore the Serbian flag, although the authorities have not yet released details regarding the individuals or groups responsible for this trafficking operation. Italian police stated that if the cocaine had been successfully introduced into the illegal market, criminal organizations could have generated profits amounting to approximately 250 million euros.
This operation is being described by Italian authorities as one of the largest seizures recorded in recent years at the Vado Ligure port. Officials attributed the successful intervention to heightened controls being implemented on trade routes connecting South America with Europe, routes that have increasingly become conduits for drug trafficking.
