BMW Welt in Munich is hosting a major exhibition titled “BMW Art Cars – 20 Artists, 50 Years of Innovation. Reunited at BMW Welt,” to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the BMW Art Cars collection. The show, which runs from April 29 to August 31, 2026, will feature all 20 BMW art cars—described as “sculptures on wheels”—together in one location for the first time.
This exhibition also concludes the BMW Art Car World Tour, which has visited more than 30 international sites. The collection’s origins date back to 1975, when the artist Alexander Calder painted a BMW 3.0 CSL for the 24 Hours of Le Mans race. Since that initial piece, BMW vehicles have been transformed into significant works of art by globally recognized artists.
Notable contributors to the collection include Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney, Jeff Koons, Olafur Eliasson, and Julie Mehretu, who created the most recent art car addition. The exhibition provides a comprehensive look at five decades of artistic collaboration between BMW and the art world. It showcases how the brand’s cars have served as canvases for diverse creative talents, merging automotive engineering with fine art.
The display highlights the evolution of both the vehicles and the artistic interpretations applied to them, solidifying the collection’s status as a unique intersection of art and automotive design.
