Mimoza Kusari-Lila, the acting Minister of Industry, Entrepreneurship, Trade, and Innovation (MINTI), has addressed the persistent challenge of Kosovo’s trade balance, confirming that while the nation continues to face a significant trade deficit, the ministry is implementing targeted measures to bolster the domestic economy. Kusari-Lila stated that the primary strategic focus involves strengthening local production capabilities, boosting export volumes, and actively working to substitute imported goods with domestic alternatives. During an interview with Ekonomia Online, the Minister acknowledged that the trade deficit remains substantial, estimated at approximately six billion euros on a year-on-year basis.
However, she highlighted a positive trend in the export sector, noting a reported 16 percent increase in exports compared to the corresponding period last year. To address the structural imbalance, a key component of the government’s strategy, according to Kusari-Lila, involves legislative reform. Specifically, the ministry aims to institute changes that will grant local producers priority consideration within the public procurement processes.
This policy shift is intended to create a more stable and robust market for domestically manufactured goods.
