Due to high demand in both local and international markets, the collection and sale of these berries provide a crucial source of income for local communities every summer. However, residents have voiced concerns regarding competition and equitable access to resources within the Sharr Mountain area.
They report that the collection of boronic berries is being impacted by an influx of individuals from neighboring regions, including Kosovo, Albania, and various cities within the country. According to local inhabitants, the regulations established following the declaration of Sharr Mountain National Park appear to be applied inconsistently among different groups. For instance, Besim Abdija, a resident of Shipkovica, noted that while a kilogram of boronic berries commands a price of approximately 500 denars, the effort required for collection is substantial.
Beyond the issues of competition, local residents also express frustration over perceived punitive measures. They stated that even basic needs, such as cutting wood for household use, can result in penalties, adding to the difficulty of sustaining livelihoods while navigating the new protected status of the mountainous region.
