Rescue teams have located the body of renowned alpinist Nirmal Purja, who died alongside nine other mountaineers during an expedition in the northern region of Pakistan this week. According to Ayaz Shigri, the Secretary General of the Pakistan Alpine Club, the official mountaineering organization in the country, Purja’s remains were found at an altitude of approximately 5,700 meters on Broad Peak. Shigri announced the recovery three days after Purja and the rest of his team were reported missing following an earthquake in the area.
He confirmed that efforts have yielded the recovery of seven bodies, along with parts belonging to an eighth individual. Search and rescue operations are continuing with the objective of locating the remaining two missing members. Purja was leading a ten-person expedition that included members from various backgrounds, such as Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy from Oman, Sohail Sakhi from Pakistan, and Wang Zho.
The discovery of Purja’s body marks a significant development in the ongoing search. The Pakistan Alpine Club continues to coordinate efforts to ensure all personnel involved in the expedition are accounted for. The operation remains focused on recovering any remaining human remains and assessing the full scope of the incident within the challenging terrain of Pakistan.
