Beginning August 1, the Swiss Federal Council will initiate the digitization of the procedures governing the acquisition of Swiss citizenship. According to a recent press release, this digital transformation is designed to modernize the administrative processes for naturalization within Switzerland. The primary objective of this digital initiative is to optimize inter-departmental communication and streamline the application process.
Previously, communication between the cantonal responsible authorities and the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) often relied on physical mail. The new framework anticipates that this correspondence will transition to digital channels. Furthermore, the project involves establishing a new interface within the Central Information System for Migration (ZEMIS).
This updated system will enable applicants to submit their naturalization applications electronically. The implementation of this advanced framework will proceed in phases. Initially, the new digital tools will undergo a pilot testing period across several selected cantons.
Following the successful evaluation in these initial locations, the connectivity and use of the system will be gradually extended to the remaining cantons across the country. This phased approach aims to ensure a smooth transition while maintaining the high standards of administrative accuracy expected in the process of acquiring Swiss citizenship.
