MSH: Breastfeeding for a sustainable start in life – let’s strengthen what works

In observance of World Breastfeeding Week, which this year focuses on the theme, “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life, Strengthening What Works,” the Ministry of Health (MSH) has issued a reminder regarding the critical role of infant nutrition. The MSH emphasizes that breastfeeding remains the most natural and safest method for nourishing newborns and infants. According to the MSH announcement, breast milk provides a comprehensive source of necessary nutrients vital for proper growth and development.

Beyond basic nutrition, it plays a crucial role in bolstering immunity and has been linked to a reduced risk of various diseases for both the child and the mother. This practice contributes significantly to the overall health outcomes for both parties involved. In alignment with global health guidelines, the MSH reiterates the recommendations set forth by the UNICEF and WHO Breastfeeding Committee.

These guidelines strongly advise exclusive breastfeeding for the initial six months of life. Following this period, continued breastfeeding alongside the introduction of appropriate complementary foods is recommended. The promotion of breastfeeding is viewed by public health bodies as a cornerstone of achieving sustainable community health.

By supporting maternal nutrition through breastfeeding, communities can build a foundation for lifelong wellness, thereby supporting a more sustainable start to life for the next generation. The MSH continues to advocate for comprehensive support systems to ensure mothers are educated and equipped to sustain optimal breastfeeding practices.
