Tired of artificial content? Snapchat changes rules for AI videos

Snapchat has announced a policy change regarding the visibility of videos within its Spotlight section, specifically targeting content created entirely through artificial intelligence. The platform stated that videos generated exclusively by AI will no longer be featured in the Spotlight recommendations. However, the service intends to permit content that has been enhanced or edited using AI tools, provided that these additions are clearly labeled as AI-assisted.

Snapchat clarified that this measure is not an outright prohibition on the use of AI as a creative tool. Instead, the goal is to mitigate the proliferation of repetitive or low-quality material, which the company has termed “AI slop.” This policy adjustment follows increasing user feedback expressing dissatisfaction with the volume of purely AI-generated content. The decision comes as various social media platforms navigate the integration of generative AI.

While some competitors, such as Meta, continue to invest heavily in supporting AI-generated content, Snapchat is adjusting its recommendation algorithms. The modification aims to maintain a higher standard for the videos presented to users in Spotlight, balancing technological innovation with content quality control.
