Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić criticized the Montenegrin government’s decision to send representatives to the commemoration of the 31st anniversary of the Croatian military-police operation “Storm” in Knin. Quoting RTS, Vučić stated, “The official state of Montenegro participates in the celebration of ‘Storm,’ while it did not send anyone to the commemoration of the Serbs killed in Mrkonjic Grad. Thank you to the Government of Montenegro.
This is not the end, but only the beginning of such decisions.”
According to vijesti.me, Vučić added that public expectations following the 2020 political changes in Montenegro have been high, asserting that Serbia must continue to support the Republika Srpska and Serbs in Montenegro. He remarked, “It is good to see all these facts, because that way we will be better prepared for the political events that are coming. We must be aware of all the problems and divisions that have been imposed on us.”
Conversely, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro stated that the acting head of the Montenegrin Embassy in Croatia will attend the ceremony marking Victory Day, Homeland Thanksgiving Day, Croatian Veterans Day, and the anniversary of Operation Storm.
The ministry framed this attendance as standard diplomatic protocol, particularly among neighboring and NATO-allied nations, emphasizing respect for the host state and its ceremonies. They affirmed Montenegro’s commitment to good neighborly relations and regional cooperation. This contrasts with last year, when the Montenegrin Ministry of Defense declined an invitation to the Knin ceremony, citing the sensitive historical and regional context surrounding Operation Storm.
