The Kosovo Business Alliance (AKB) has signaled preliminary support for increasing the national minimum wage to 500 euros. However, the organization simultaneously called for greater transparency from the government concerning the economic and social analyses underpinning this proposed increase. In a formal statement, the AKB affirmed that elevating wages and enhancing worker welfare are beneficial for the overall economy.
Despite this general support for wage improvements, the alliance voiced significant apprehension regarding the process by which the 500 euro minimum wage figure was determined and subsequently implemented. The AKB emphasized that the decision lacked what it considers a comprehensive institutional dialogue involving social partners. Furthermore, the alliance stressed the need for sufficient transparency regarding the detailed economic, social, and legal studies that informed the policy.
“AKB preliminarily supports the increase in wages and the improvement of workers’ welfare in Kosovo,” the statement read. “However, AKB expresses serious concern about how the 500 euro minimum wage was decided and implemented, without a full institutional dialogue with social partners and without sufficient transparency regarding economic, social, and legal analyses.”
These concerns suggest that while the AKB recognizes the economic merits of raising the wage floor, it insists that future decisions must be based on transparent, collaborative analysis involving all relevant stakeholders.
