Infections associated with the West Nile virus are showing an upward trend across Greece, according to recent reports from the National Public Health Organization (EODY). Health authorities have documented an increase in local cases, prompting heightened monitoring of the situation. As of August 5, official data indicates that a cumulative total of 65 local cases have been diagnosed since the start of the monitoring period.
Over the past week alone, EODY reported 23 new local infections. The clinical presentation of the west Nile virus varies significantly among affected individuals. Of the total diagnosed cases, 54 patients presented with severe neurological manifestations.
These severe outcomes include central nervous system complications such as encephalitis, meningitis, or acute flaccid paralysis. Conversely, 11 cases were reported with only mild symptoms or showed no documented neurological complications. Regarding mortality, health officials confirmed that six deaths have been recorded.
All fatalities reported thus far occurred among patients aged over 65 years who also presented with pre-existing comorbidities. The ongoing surveillance aims to track the spread of the nile virus and monitor the severity of associated illness. Authorities continue to advise the public on preventative measures while tracking the incidence rate of these cases to guide public health responses.
