Greece has reported a confirmed total of 65 cases of West Nile virus, according to data released by the National Public Health Organization (NPHO). The region has seen a recent increase in cases, with 23 new infections registered in the past week alone. The surveillance data, tracking activity since August 5, indicates that 54 patients have developed significant neurological complications linked to the virus.
These severe manifestations include encephalitis, meningitis, and acute flaccid paralysis. In contrast, an additional 11 infected individuals presented with mild symptoms or showed no detectable involvement of the nervous system. Health authorities in Greece have confirmed six fatalities associated with the outbreak.
All deceased individuals were aged 65 or older and had suffered from severe forms of neurological disease. The ongoing monitoring of the nile virus outbreak continues to show strain on medical resources. Currently, 20 patients remain hospitalized for treatment.
The NPHO advises the public to remain vigilant regarding mosquito precautions as the transmission risk remains a concern across the country. Public health officials are urging residents to take preventative measures to limit exposure to the virus.
