Ten years have passed since the devastating floods that struck the city of Skopje. On August 6, 2016, the region experienced one of the most significant natural disasters in modern Macedonian history. The catastrophe began with a powerful storm system bringing torrential rain, flash floods, and strong winds, initially impacting the Pollog region before escalating into the Skopje area.
The event resulted in widespread devastation and claimed the lives of 22 individuals. The intensity of the rainfall recorded in Skopje was extreme; within a mere 24 hours, the city received 93 liters of rain per square meter. Furthermore, in the initial two hours alone, reports documented over 800 incidents of flash flooding.
The areas most severely affected were located in the northern parts of the capital, including Stajkovci, Singeliq, Smilkovci, Çreshevo, and Haraçine. In these locations, floodwaters caused extensive material damage and resulted in fatalities, including that of a two-year-old child. This anniversary marks ten years since the powerful storm reshaped the landscape and community.
The scale of the flooding presented significant challenges to infrastructure and daily life across the metropolitan area. The memory of the event remains a stark reminder of the vulnerability of the region to extreme weather patterns.
