The prolonged absence of safe drinking water in Gostivar, which has now persisted for four weeks, presents a significant public health hazard, according to Dr. Aleksandar Trajanovski. He warned that the current situation risks escalating beyond immediate gastrointestinal issues.
Beyond the already recorded instances of vomiting, diarrhea, and elevated body temperatures, Trajanovski noted that the inability of residents to maintain proper personal hygiene due to the lack of water could lead to the emergence of viral hepatitis. Speaking on the crisis, Trajanovski, who also serves as a deputy leader of the LSDM opposition, criticized the response to the water shortage. He argued that the unfolding emergency exposed significant deficiencies in the preparedness and coordination among relevant institutions.
According to his assessment, the declaration of an epidemic should have been initiated much earlier. Such proactive measures, he suggested, would have allowed for the timely strengthening of local capacities and a thorough, immediate assessment of the ground situation. The ongoing lack of potable water in Gostivar continues to raise serious concerns among health experts regarding preventative measures and public sanitation.
The expert emphasized that sustained access to clean water is fundamental to preventing the spread of waterborne diseases, making the current duration of the shortage a critical public safety issue.
