Conventional electric motors traditionally rely on powerful physical magnets, components that often necessitate the use of rare and costly metals. In response to these material constraints, the Indian technology company Vimag Labs is developing a novel alternative that seeks to replace these physical magnets entirely with a sophisticated digital system. The core innovation developed by the company is a control mechanism that utilizes advanced software to manage the necessary electromagnetic fields.

Instead of relying on fixed physical components, the software directs electronics to generate the required magnetic field with high precision, creating the field exactly where and when it is needed. According to reports from the Elektrec portal, the breakthrough is rooted not in discovering a new material, but in the development of intelligent control technology. Manish Seth, the founder and CEO of the company, estimates that the development of this proprietary technology required an extensive commitment of over 87,600 hours of engineering effort.

Following this intensive period of development, the company successfully secured a patent and has attracted approximately 4.4 million euros in funding. The firm has since moved into initial testing phases, signaling a significant step toward commercializing its advanced electric motor technology. This digital approach aims to mitigate the supply chain risks and high costs associated with traditional rare-earth magnets, marking a potential shift in the manufacturing of electric motors.
