The Institute of Public Health (ISHP) has issued warnings regarding the heightened vulnerability of the elderly population during periods of extreme heat and heatwaves. Individuals aged 65 and older face increased difficulty regulating body temperature when exposed to high ambient temperatures. This risk factor is further elevated for those managing chronic illnesses or those who rely on regular medical therapies.
The ISHP specifically advises that certain medications can interfere with the body’s natural response to heat stress, necessitating increased vigilance and care for this demographic. Therefore, proactive measures are crucial when unusually high temperatures are forecasted. As essential preventive guidelines, the ISHP recommends that the elderly minimize direct sun exposure, particularly between the hours of 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
Furthermore, individuals should limit strenuous physical activity and prolonged periods of standing outdoors during the hottest parts of the day. To mitigate risks, appropriate attire is advised; wearing light-colored, breathable clothing is recommended. Staying hydrated and seeking cooler environments are also critical components of heat safety protocols.
The ISHP stresses that awareness and adherence to these guidelines are vital for protecting the most susceptible members of the community during adverse weather conditions.
