YouTube blocks controversial Serbian director Emir Kusturica’s channel for publishing content in collaboration with Sputnik

YouTube has reportedly blocked a YouTube channel belonging to the controversial Serbian director Emir Kusturica. According to Meduza, the account disseminated content produced in partnership with Sputnik’s Serbian service. This channel contained a collection of 243 videos, which spanned various formats including shows, programs, and musical materials featuring Kusturica.

Prior to its suspension, the channel maintained an approximate subscriber base of 30,000. Emir Kusturica has a public record of expressing consistent support for Russian President Vladimir Putin and the policies enacted by the Kremlin. Throughout his career, Kusturica has made several statements aligning with pro-Russian viewpoints.

For instance, during participation in the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, the director spoke out against perceived Western efforts aimed at diminishing Russian culture. The blocking of the channel brings attention to the director’s public alignment.

Kusturica’s statements have repeatedly placed him within a sphere of commentary supportive of the Russian state narrative. The content published through the Sputnik collaboration, therefore, reflects both Kusturica’s artistic output and his publicly voiced political endorsements, drawing scrutiny regarding the platform’s content guidelines.
