“Wait here” – Father leaves 7-year-old son alone on Mount Fuji and continues climbing

A man was arrested in Japan after police discovered that he had left his seven-year-old son unattended on Mount Fuji for several hours. The child was found sitting alone near the sixth station of a trail leading to the summit, in conditions described as foggy and rainy, at an altitude exceeding 2,000 meters above sea level. Reports indicate that the 48-year-old father instructed his young son to “wait here” after the boy expressed feeling tired.

Subsequently, the father proceeded with the ascent toward the mountain’s peak accompanied by the child’s older sibling. Staff members from a mountain station discovered the child early in the morning, around 7:30 AM. Authorities immediately notified the police.

A search operation located the father several hours later, situated between the seventh and eighth stations, approximately three hours away from the point where the child was discovered. The incident highlighted the severe risks associated with high-altitude trekking, particularly when supervision is compromised. The investigation revealed the extent of the separation, as the boy was left with only a small amount of food and a refreshing drink.

The presence of the old weather conditions compounded the danger posed by the old and challenging terrain. The father was taken into custody following the rescue. The family unit was reunited safely after the ordeal, underscoring the critical nature of parental supervision during strenuous outdoor activities.
