When temperatures become dangerous: How to favor the formation of blood clots

Exposure to high temperatures presents significant health concerns, placing considerable strain on the human body, particularly the cardiovascular system. While the risk is elevated for the elderly and individuals managing chronic illnesses, even otherwise healthy people can experience symptoms like weakness, dizziness, low blood pressure, and fatigue during heatwaves. The World Health Organization has issued warnings regarding heat exposure, noting that it can lead to severe dehydration, exacerbate existing cardiovascular conditions, and increase the risk of thrombogenesis, or the formation of blood clots.

The physiological mechanism behind this strain involves the body’s attempt to regulate its core temperature. When ambient temperatures rise significantly, the body initiates mechanisms like increased sweating to cool down. This process, however, can lead to substantial loss of water and essential electrolytes.

This fluid imbalance directly impacts the volume and composition of the blood. The heart must work harder to circulate blood to the skin’s surface to facilitate cooling, increasing cardiac workload. Furthermore, dehydration can cause the blood volume to decrease, which can lead to lower blood pressure.

Consequently, the cardiovascular system is placed under added stress, making monitoring and preventative measures crucial during periods of extreme heat.
