The Federal Administrative Court of Switzerland has upheld the decision to revoke the Swiss citizenship of an individual linked to extremist activities. The revocation follows evidence that the person pledged allegiance to the terrorist organization “Islamic State” (IS) and was implicated in planning terrorist attacks within France. The individual, who is of Bosnian-Herzegovinian origin and has resided in French Switzerland, originally acquired Swiss citizenship in the year 2000.
Legal proceedings against him began in Paris, where a court in January 2021 convicted him of planning such attacks, resulting in a 15-year prison sentence. Subsequently, in May 2021, the Swiss State Secretariat for Migration initiated the process to revoke his Swiss passport. The authority cited that his involvement in terrorist actions had caused significant damage to the interests and image of Switzerland.
Under Swiss law, the revocation of citizenship is considered an exceptional measure. The court’s confirmation solidifies this administrative action, marking a significant legal precedent regarding national security and dual loyalties within the country.
