Kelmendi: The night before the killing, Jusuf Gërvalla, Kadri Zeka, and I agreed to unite

In an exclusive interview for the program “Debat Plus,” as part of the “Dosjet” series, activist Ibrahim Kelmendi provided detailed recollections concerning his association with Jusuf Gërvalla. Kelmendi recounted aspects of his relationship with Gërvalla, the dynamics between Gërvalla and Kadri Zeka, and a significant meeting that took place on January 16–17, 1982, shortly before the deaths of the figures involved. Kelmendi initially focused on Gërvalla’s contributions to the newspaper Bashkimi.

He noted that Gërvalla provided assistance to the publication despite belonging to a different organizational affiliation. According to Kelmendi, this cross-organizational collaboration demonstrated that, during that period, the overarching national issue held greater importance than the specific agendas of individual groups. Kelmendi recounted that the request for assistance was made because the newspaper lacked adequate staffing.

He described the situation, stating that Jusuf was approached for help when the organization was short on personnel. Kelmendi characterized the support provided by Jusuf as a notable positive development. These accounts shed light on the period leading up to the events of early 1982.

The testimony from Kelmendi offers insight into the political atmosphere and the cooperative efforts among different factions in the time preceding the critical dates mentioned.
