Massive flooding has struck the border region between Nepal and China, resulting in significant loss of life and a large number of missing people. Reports indicate that at least 162 people died in Nepal, while three fatalities were confirmed in Tibet. Chinese state media has stated that the total number of missing people is estimated to be up to 1,000.
In Tibet, the disaster was attributed to landslides, which caused the deaths of three people. Furthermore, 558 individuals remain unaccounted for, with reports specifying that approximately 260 of those missing are foreign nationals. The initial reports regarding the triggering event also underwent revision.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) had first reported a 4.4 magnitude earthquake near Kathmandu, located about 66 kilometers north of the capital. However, the USGS subsequently updated its analysis, clarifying that the seismic event was not an earthquake but rather a 5.2 magnitude ice slide. This slide was responsible for generating a massive flow through the area.
These severe natural events have impacted both Nepal and Tibet, leaving many people stranded and prompting large-scale rescue and recovery efforts. The combination of flooding and landslides has created a complex humanitarian situation across the border areas.
