Daniel Sugar, from the University of Calgary, observed the aftermath, noting that evidence suggests a portion of the glacier broke away, resulting in a fall of ice spanning approximately a kilometer through the valley.
He described the resulting landscape as resembling the impact zone of a large explosion, confirming that the visible debris are remnants of the melted glacier. While the immediate cause points to the structural failure of the glacier, Dr. Sugar cautioned that definitive conclusions are premature.
He emphasized that other potential contributing factors, such as accelerated ice melt linked to climate change, cannot yet be excluded as possible causes for the extensive flooding. The incident has resulted in a significant humanitarian crisis, with reports confirming that hundreds of individuals remain missing in both Nepal and the neighboring region of Tibet. The debris involved in the event was described as a substantial mass of ice, measuring nearly 700 meters in width, which detached from the main body of the glacier.
