The Association of Kosovo Municipalities is scheduled to hold a protest today at the “Skënderbeu” square in Pristina. The demonstration is set to commence at 11:00 AM. According to statements issued regarding the planned event, the primary objective of the protest is to address perceived central-level interference concerning the defined competencies, financial obligations, and general institutional support afforded to local governing bodies.
During a press conference held on Saturday, Agim Aliu, Chairman of the Association of Kosovo Municipalities and of Ferizaj, confirmed the details of the protest. Aliu emphasized that the gathering would remain peaceful, non-partisan, and fundamentally institutional in nature. He stated that the core demand of the municipalities is not the acquisition of new privileges, but rather the consistent adherence to established laws and competencies that belong to local government units.
The leadership stressed that the action represents a defense of existing rights. “The municipalities are not seeking privileges; the municipalities… are seeking what belongs to the citizens of the Republic,” Aliu stated.
The association views the protest as a necessary measure to reinforce the autonomy and operational capacity of the municipalities against what they describe as overreach from central authorities. The planned gathering aims to initiate a dialogue regarding the necessary structural support required for the effective functioning of local governance across Kosovo.
