An investigation has been launched against three medical professionals at the Pogradec maternity hospital following the death of a 36-year-old pregnant woman. The police have referred materials to the Prosecutor’s Office concerning the care provided to the woman, who was admitted to the facility on the evening of August 30 while reportedly in poor health. The three individuals charged are Blerta Delija, a 35-year-old gynecologist; Anri Topin, a 40-year-old resuscitator; and Saimir Çelën, a 34-year-old surgeon.
All three are currently employed as doctors at the Pogradec maternity hospital. According to police reports, the 36-year-old patient, who was seven months pregnant, was examined by the three doctors at the hospital. Following the examination, she was transferred by ambulance to a specialized maternity hospital located in Tirana for advanced medical assistance.
It was during this transport that the patient’s health condition deteriorated. The subsequent investigation focused on the medical procedures and the continuum of care provided by the team. The formal charges against the three doctors relate directly to the sequence of events following the initial assessment at the local hospital.
Authorities are examining the details surrounding the patient’s deteriorating condition during transit to determine the full scope of responsibility. The case remains under the jurisdiction of the Prosecutor’s Office.
