Man Arrested Following Botulinum Toxin Discovery in Baby Food
A 39-year-old man has been arrested in Austria following the discovery of several jars containing botulinum toxin within food products intended for children. The arrest occurred in Salzburg, west of the country, and he is currently being questioned by police. The investigation began after the toxin was found in a jar of HiPP baby food, a product manufactured in Germany, which was purchased at a supermarket in Eisenstadt, Austria, on April 18th.
Authorities initiated a precautionary recall of all HiPP baby food jars sold through SPAR supermarkets across Austria, including EUROSPAR, INTERSPAR, and Maximarkt stores. The discovery prompted similar actions in neighboring countries. Retailers in Slovakia and the Czech Republic have also removed all HiPP baby food jars from sale.
Police have not yet released further details regarding the investigation or the suspect’s motives. The focus remains on determining the source of the toxin and ensuring the safety of food products. The incident highlights ongoing vigilance regarding food safety standards.
