Bee Swarm Causes I-40 Closure in Knoxville, Tennessee

A truck carrying approximately one million bees overturned on Interstate 40 in Knoxville, Tennessee, on Friday, prompting a temporary closure of Exit 40. The incident resulted in motorists being forced to brake as workers and, reportedly, drones, responded to the scene. Mark Nagi, regional spokesperson for the Tennessee Department of Transportation, confirmed that no injuries were sustained as a result of the event.

The ramp from I-40 East to Henley Road was subsequently closed to allow for the removal of the damaged truck and the relocation of the bees. “The ramp from I-40 East to Henley Road is now open again, but the truck is wrecked and the bees are scattered,” Nagi stated in a departmental update. He emphasized the need for caution, advising individuals not wearing protective beekeeping suits to remain in their vehicles in the affected area.

Following the removal of the bees from the site, the situation was resolved. Authorities confirmed that all of the bees had been successfully moved from the Interstate 40 corridor.
