After four years of war, which EU countries are hosting the most Ukrainians?

EU Temporary Protection Status for Ukrainian Refugees Continues to Rise

According to the latest data released by Eurostat, a total of 4.4 million non-EU citizens had been granted temporary protection status within the European Union by February 2026. This figure represents a 0.5% increase over the preceding month, highlighting the ongoing need for support among Ukrainian refugees. The three European countries providing the most temporary protection were Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic.

However, the status was extended to individuals in 24 different countries across the EU. Notably, the largest absolute increases in the number of beneficiaries were recorded in Germany, the Czech Republic, and Spain. Conversely, Estonia, France, and Luxembourg experienced declines in the number of individuals under temporary protection.

The vast majority of those receiving temporary protection – over 98.4% – were Ukrainian citizens. This ongoing situation underscores the significant humanitarian effort undertaken by the European Union, with countries collaborating to provide temporary protection to displaced individuals. The data emphasizes the continued need for support and highlights the diverse geographic distribution of those seeking temporary protection.

  1. It’s concerning to see the continued need for this protection status after so many years of conflict.
