North Macedonia Faces Persistent Poverty Concerns, New Data Reveals

Recent statistics released by the State Statistics Agency paint a concerning picture of economic hardship within North Macedonia. The agency’s latest indicators for 2024 show that 21.9 percent of the population lives below the established poverty threshold. This translates to over one in five individuals experiencing income levels below 60 percent of the median equivalent household income.

The figures highlight a significant challenge for the country, with approximately 30 percent of citizens falling below the poverty line. The poverty threshold is defined as 178,286 denars annually for a single-person household and 374,400 denars for a family of four – consisting of two adults and two children under 14. These figures represent a substantial portion of the population struggling to meet basic needs.

Notably, the data does not account for social transfers when calculating income levels, potentially underestimating the true extent of financial vulnerability. Further investigation into the factors contributing to this persistent poverty rate is warranted. The percentage of individuals living below the poverty line remains a key concern for policymakers.
