A significant quantity of undeclared baklava was intercepted at the Swiss border on March 30, 2026, at 17:49, as reported by Gazeta Express. A Turkish national was apprehended at a customs checkpoint in Kreuzlingen, northwest Switzerland, while transporting 270 kilograms of baklava alongside other concealed sweets within a vehicle registered in Switzerland. The Federal Customs and Border Guard Office (FOCB) announced the incident in a Monday press release.
The total value of the illicit Turkish sweets amounted to €2,540 (CHF 2,335). The 44-year-old driver explained that the shipment was destined for a specific event taking place in Switzerland. As a consequence of attempting to import the goods without proper declaration, the driver faced substantial penalties.
He was obligated to pay several hundred Swiss francs in value-added tax and unpaid customs duties, alongside a fine. Despite these charges, authorities ultimately allowed him to proceed with the delivery of the baklava.
