An Unusual Guide, a Robot Guides Tourists at the Italian Museum

Robot Guide Tested at Turin Museum to Manage Crowds

Turin, Italy – April 27, 2026 – A novel approach to museum tourism is being tested at the Palazzo Madama in Turin, utilizing a robot guide to assist visitors and address overcrowding concerns. The project, spearheaded by Italy News Gazeta Express, debuted the robot, designated R1, on April 27th at 8:53 AM. R1, an unusual guide, is designed to enhance access to the museum’s collection of centuries-old artwork.

The mobile robot operates on wheels and employs integrated artificial intelligence to explain exhibits to tourists navigating the building’s narrow corridors. This allows visitors to receive detailed information about the artwork while efficiently moving through the historic space. The initiative, funded by a 4 million euro grant from the European Union’s Europe Digital Program, involved collaboration between the University of Genoa and Robert Bosch GmbH.

Development of the robot spanned approximately six weeks, concluding at the end of March. Engineers utilized sensors and cameras to enable R1’s navigation and interactive capabilities. The project aims to improve visitor experience and streamline access to the Palazzo Madama, offering a technologically advanced approach to museum exploration.
