Balkan expert calls for more pressure on those who do not recognize Kosovo

During testimony before a Canadian parliamentary committee, Balkan expert Dr. Jasmin Mujanovic advised the United States and Canada to address the issue of Kosovo’s non-recognition as a bilateral diplomatic priority concerning the remaining European Union member states that have not recognized its independence. Speaking before the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development, Dr.

Mujanovic offered his expertise on the security dynamics of the Western Balkans. Mujanovic argued that there is “no coherent reason” why several EU nations, including Spain, Slovakia, Greece, Cyprus, and Romania, do not recognize Kosovo’s sovereignty. He suggested that the US and Canada should press these five member states to treat the non-recognition issue as a direct bilateral matter between Washington and Ottawa, versus the five capitals.

The expert stressed the necessity of a coordinated Western policy aimed at advancing regional stability and deeper Euro-Atlantic integration across the Balkans. His testimony reflects increasing interest from Ottawa in adopting a more proactive policy stance toward the region amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions involving Russia and China. Originally from Sarajevo, Dr.

Mujanovic holds a PhD from York University and serves as a researcher and non-resident senior fellow at the New Lines Institute for Strategy and Policy. His academic focus involves the democratization processes in post-authoritarian and post-conflict societies within the Western Balkans. He is the author of published works such as Hunger and Fury: The Crisis of Democracy in the Balkans and The Bosniaks: Nationhood After Genocide, with his analyses featured in major international publications.
