Berlin reacts to the announcement of the withdrawal of 5,000 US troops from Germany

German Defense Minister Addresses US Troop Withdrawal

Berlin – German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has characterized the United States’ decision to withdraw a portion of its troops from Europe as anticipated and a logical development. Speaking shortly after the announcement, Pistorius emphasized the necessity for European nations to assume greater responsibility for their own security and bolstering defensive capabilities within the continent. The minister highlighted the ongoing need for strengthened defense structures across Europe, responding to the reduction of approximately 5000 American troops slated to depart from Germany.

Pistorius stated, “It was predictable that the US would withdraw troops from Europe, including from Germany.”

He also announced Germany’s intention to foster close collaboration with the “Five Eyes Group”—comprising the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and Poland—in future security and defense operations. This partnership will be central to addressing evolving security challenges. Earlier, opposition leader Friedrich Merz criticized former President Trump’s role in initiating the troop drawdown.

The Pentagon confirmed plans to remove approximately 5000 American troops from Germany, marking a significant shift in the transatlantic security landscape. Pistorius’ comments underscore Germany’s commitment to proactive engagement within this evolving context.
