Mircea Lucescu, a renowned figure in world football, died at the age of 80 following a heart attack. He passed away at the University Hospital where he had been hospitalized for several days. Lucescu experienced health complications during the Romanian national team’s camp ahead of a friendly match against Slovakia (0-2), which he did not attend.
He was immediately taken to the hospital and suffered a heart attack on April 3rd. He subsequently entered a coma and, despite medical efforts, did not recover. The death of Lucescu comes just days after the end of his tenure as head coach of the Romanian national team, following the team’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
He was appointed to the position in August 2024.
