Bytyqi: If we are not a member of the EU by 2030, Macedonia risks having fewer than 1 million inhabitants

LSDM deputy Fatmir Bytyqi indicated on the “Biznes 21” program on TV21 that North Macedonia faces a potential demographic challenge, suggesting the country might have a population below one million inhabitants by 2050. Bytyqi stated that the current trajectory presents a rapid decline, noting that the government appears aware of the issue and is engaging in discussions regarding demographic projections. He outlined several conditions under which this decline could materialize.

According to his assessment, if specific measures are not implemented, and if the anticipated accession to the EU by 2030 does not occur, the situation could worsen. Furthermore, Bytyqi warned that the country must address its immigration prospects and foster a return wave among its citizens who have emigrated. He projected that if a significant return of expatriate citizens does not commence by 2040, and if the aforementioned conditions are unmet, the most pessimistic demographic scenario for North Macedonia points to a population count under one million by 2050.

The statements by Bytyqi underscore concerns about the future population stability of Macedonia, emphasizing the need for proactive policy interventions to mitigate potential demographic shrinkage.
