Coffee Companies Launch Initiative to Combat Deforestation
JDE Peet’s announced Wednesday the launch of the Coffee Canopy Partnership, a new system designed to track coffee cultivation and address deforestation concerns globally. The initiative involves several major coffee companies and raw material traders working together to monitor coffee farms and surrounding areas. The program utilizes satellite imagery from Airbus, combined with artificial intelligence models, to map coffee plantations and identify instances of deforestation.
This technology will allow for the accurate identification of areas posing a risk and facilitate targeted interventions. Participating companies include JDE Peet’s, Tchibo, and traders Louis Dreyfus Company, Sucden, Neumann Kaffee Gruppe, Touton, and Sucafina. The core objective is to collaborate with governments and local communities to restore forested areas and prevent further deforestation related to coffee production.
According to the companies involved, the system’s data will be used to prioritize restoration efforts and promote sustainable practices within the coffee industry. The initiative represents a significant step toward responsible sourcing and mitigating the environmental impact of coffee cultivation. The system will begin its operations shortly.
