European Council President Antonio Costa addressed the ongoing relationship between North Macedonia and the European Union following a meeting with Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski in Skopje. During the discussions, Costa emphasized that the formal commencement of negotiations between the two parties is contingent upon the approval of necessary constitutional changes within North Macedonia. Costa acknowledged the reported progress made by the country in implementing its broader reform agenda.
However, he stressed that the ratification of these constitutional modifications remains the definitive prerequisite for opening the full spectrum of benefits associated with EU membership for North Macedonia’s citizens. Speaking in Skopje, the President underscored the critical nature of this domestic step. “The approval of constitutional changes remains the only way for the formal start of negotiations,” Costa stated.
He further added that this process is essential for realizing the comprehensive advantages offered by European Union membership. Furthermore, Costa reiterated the strategic importance of the EU to the region. He characterized the European Union as the most secure and reliable partner for both North Macedonia and the wider Western Balkans.
He also highlighted the EU’s sustained role as the region’s largest investor and most significant trade partner, underlining the mutual benefits derived from continued alignment and reform efforts.
