Crime normalization in interview: Serbian moderator described the massacre at Prekaz as a “liquidation,” also emphasizing the killing of children

The remarks made by Serbian minister Snezhana Paunović concerning Kosovo have drawn condemnation from Kosovo authorities, the regional body, and the European Union. However, during a recent interview with the Serbian Courier, Paunović made statements that drew further scrutiny regarding historical events. During the interview, the minister reportedly stated that if she were positioned as the former Serbian President, Slobodan Milošević, she would have undertaken actions amounting to the “ethnic cleansing” of Kosovo.

Furthermore, she characterized the massacre that occurred at Prekaz as a “liquidation” and specifically mentioned the Mitrovica family in this context. The discussion touched upon past instances of violence, where Paunović cited the actions of the Serbian police in the village of Prekaz i Poshtëm in 1998. According to her statements, the police forces at that time were responsible for the liquidation not only of Adem Jashari, the leader of the UÇK, but also his entire family, including members of the Mitrovica family.

These comments raise significant concerns regarding the historical narrative surrounding ethnic conflict in Kosovo. Critics argue that her remarks minimize or normalize past atrocities, linking current political discourse to allegations of state-sponsored violence. The juxtaposition of these statements against the backdrop of ongoing international scrutiny over human rights in the region has prompted widespread debate concerning accountability for past crimes in Kosovo.
