ESHS: Every unemployed citizen of Macedonia is poor.

North Macedonia Faces Significant Poverty Challenge with 21.9% Poverty Rate

Final data released by the State Statistical Office reveals a concerning situation in North Macedonia, with every citizen experiencing poverty according to 2024 figures. The national poverty rate stands at 21.9 percent, indicating that over one in five residents live below the established poverty line. The poverty threshold is determined by household size.

For a single-person household, the annual income required to meet this threshold is 178,286 denars. A four-person family – consisting of two adults and two children under 14 – requires 374,400 denars annually, equating to approximately 31,200 denars per month. Experts attribute this widespread poverty to a lack of robust social policies within the country.

They emphasize the need for systemic mechanisms to support vulnerable populations, stating that the current situation reflects a failure to proactively address economic hardship. The data highlights a critical challenge for North Macedonia, with the significant proportion of its population living below the established income benchmarks. Further investigation and policy development are considered necessary to combat this persistent issue and ensure a minimum standard of living for all citizens.
