Five thousand children are waiting for a spot in public kindergartens in Macedonia

As of 2025, the provision of preschool education in Macedonia faces significant capacity challenges. Current data indicates that approximately 5,000 children were placed on waiting lists for public kindergartens. Looking toward the established coverage objective by 2032, estimates suggest that providing an additional 19,000 spots will be necessary to meet the projected demand.

A recent UNICEF analysis from October 2025 noted 4,894 children on waiting lists, suggesting that the existing system capacity is currently insufficient to facilitate a substantial increase in coverage in the coming years. However, analysts caution that it is crucial to differentiate between the immediate issue of waiting lists and the broader gap in educational access. The data reveals that over 79,000 children aged zero to six are not currently enrolled in preschool education.

This figure suggests that the challenge is not confined merely to overcrowded kindergartens within major urban centers like Skopje. The discrepancy highlights a systemic gap in early childhood education access. While the waiting lists point to immediate overcrowding, the larger figure underscores a significant portion of the child population that remains outside the formal structure of kindergartens.

Addressing the needs of these children requires expanding infrastructure beyond simply managing wait times to ensure comprehensive enrollment opportunities across the nation.
