France activates emergency plan against extreme heat

The French government has initiated the activation of the “Orsec extreme heat plan” across several departments anticipating a new heatwave expected to persist through next week. This measure was implemented for regions placed under a red heat alert, signaling a heightened state of emergency response. According to government spokesperson Maud Bregeon, consultations and preparatory work have been conducted in preparation for the sustained period of high temperatures.

The national weather service, Météo France, reported that nine departments in western France were designated under red alert for extreme heat as of Friday. Furthermore, an additional 72 departments are currently under an orange alert level. The specific departments under the highest level of alert include Morbihan (56), Ille-et-Vilaine (35), Mayenne (53), Sarthe (72), Loire-Atlantique (44), Vendée (85), Maine-et-Loire (49), Vienne (89), and Des.

The activation of this comprehensive plan reflects the anticipated severity and duration of the heat event. Authorities are managing the potential risks associated with the extreme heat conditions by mobilizing resources and coordinating emergency services across the affected zones. The government’s response aims to mitigate potential health and infrastructure impacts resulting from the prolonged period of intense heat across the western regions of France.
