Kosovo’s Press Freedom Ranking Improves, Yet Challenges Remain on World Press Freedom Day
Kosovo’s position within global rankings of press freedom remains a point of concern despite recent improvements, observed on World Press Freedom Day. Data indicates a sustained challenge for journalists operating within the country. According to the Reporters Without Borders 2025 report, Kosovo was ranked 99th out of 180 countries.
For 2026, the country’s ranking saw a slight increase to 84th, reflecting some positive developments. This improvement largely stems from a decision by the Constitutional Court regarding the KPM law. However, local reports continue to document a rise in threats and attacks directed at journalists working in Kosovo.
These incidents highlight ongoing difficulties for media professionals seeking to exercise their freedom of expression. While the shift in the Reporters Without Borders Index indicates a positive trend, it does not represent a fundamental alteration to the operational realities faced by journalists in Kosovo. The situation underscores the continued need for sustained efforts to safeguard press freedom and ensure a secure environment for media operations within the country.
Further work is required to fully realize the potential for a robust and independent press in Kosovo.
