General Motors has announced a temporary shutdown of its Factory Zero electric vehicle plant in Detroit, scheduled to commence on April 13th. This decision impacts approximately 1,300 employees who will be laid off during this period. The reduction in demand for electric vehicles within the United States is the primary driver behind this action.
Specifically, the GMC Hummer EV has faced a substantial sales downturn. Sales for the vehicle totaled 1,653 units in the first quarter of 2026, representing a decrease of 52.5% compared to the prior year’s performance. Conversely, the GMC Sierra EV has demonstrated a slight uptick, with 1,288 units delivered.
The general motors company is taking steps to curtail its electric vehicle expenditures, anticipating a projected loss of $7.6 billion. CEO Mary Barra remains steadfast in her belief that electric vehicles represent the company’s long-term strategic objective. To mitigate the impact, the company is simultaneously increasing production of several gasoline-powered trucks, including the Chevrolet and GMC Silverado 2500/3500 models.
This strategic shift reflects a cautious approach while the company continues to pursue its overarching commitment to electric mobility.
