German Government Spent €111 Billion on Defense Contracts Since 2022
Berlin – The German federal government has signed approximately 47,000 defense procurement contracts totaling €111 billion (approximately $130.1 billion) since announcing its new government in 2022, according to data released by the Ministry of Defence. The figures emerged in response to a parliamentary investigation led by left-wing MP Dietmar Bartsch, as reported by dpa and Telegrafi. The substantial investment reflects a significant increase in Germany’s commitment to bolstering its defense capabilities.
However, the Ministry of Defence has stated it currently lacks the capacity to assess the completion status of these projects. As of March 1, 2026, the ministry was unable to provide a definitive figure on how many contracts had been fully executed and transferred to the armed forces. A central review of the thousands of pages of documentation required to determine project completion was deemed “absurd” by ministry officials, citing the significant time and resources it would necessitate.
This inability to assess progress could potentially impact timelines for related defense projects. The total expenditure represents a considerable investment, highlighting ongoing efforts within the German defense sector.
